I have a crew of spoilt bRats.. Rats are omnivores and can eat just almost everything humans can, but as with humans it doesn't necessarily mean everything is good for them.
A staple diet of rat cubes or biomare horse pellets works well or a home made mixture.
The following cubes are the better ones.
*Cummins - The best cubes I have found so far. The rats are solid but not fat on these, builds good condition. They are solid and great for hoppers.
*Gordon's - A bit smelly but second to Cummins, slightly crumblier but survives in hoppers or mixes. No obvious change in rats on these.
*Barrastoc - I find these a bit crumbly, but fine to add to mixes. No change in rats, if anything a little weight loss.
Home Made Mix can include:
These should/can also be supplemented with:
Sick rats, skinny rats, babies and nursing mothers should have access to extra foods. I use:
Rats should always have access to fresh water and bottles are better than bowls as they cant dirty the water in them.
They love chicken or meat bones and they're great for their teeth and keeping them busy. Hard shelled nuts provide mental stimulation and they enjoy chewing the nuts out of their shells.
I breed my own mealworms as a treat for the rats which they get maybe once a month depending on how many are available.
